Default Do scammers even get punished?

About a week ago, my friend was telling me how he got runescape scammed. Now he took screenshots, and ANet didn't even do anything.

Do they not care? Is it his fault? Should the people be smarter?

Just wondering, not trying to start a ****storm.

If people ran by the motto "Never Trust Anyone" scammings would probably decrease a LOT.

It applies to real life just as much as in-game of course.

If he got scammed then yes, it is his fault, and yes, he should be smarter.

So ANet doesn't really do anything about it unless it involves with them losing their GW account or selling GW gold? Interesting.

I can't really blame them :P

Why would Anet care about runescape?

Let me guess, he tried trading GW account/gold for Runescape one? Really, if you don't see a scam in this one you deserve to get scammed.

Replacing one extreme (let's trust anybody) by the other extreme will not change the nature of the problem, only the symptoms. If you distrust everyone, you end up in a situation of "attack on availability". Anybody can lead you to believe lies, by playing on your distrusting behavior, to the point where you'll quickly end up quitting GW because "Anet is to blame for everything". By behaving this way, you're actually greatly dimishing your GW experience (though I'd have to agree that more people should be CAREFUL, not distrusting).

The paradox here is to apply the rule you suggest to the OP: why shall we believe him? (runescape-scammed? what is that?) I hope you understand I'm not attacking you, you're free to do whatever you think is right, but my experience in security shows that paranoia is a very bad strategy (hackers love paranoids, who tend to buy security software a lot more).

You need a balanced approach, do not treat a scam for 500g and one for 10k the same way, if necessary ask questions to the seller/buyer and on forums, but do not end up in an X-Files world of "Trust No One". You can build sensible models of trust online, it's not easy, but it's very rewarding.

These comments are not helpful, even if they contain a part of truth. It's judgemental, a way to say "I wouldn't have fallen into this trap, so please be like me and I'm happy that he got scammed". It's ultimately a matter of education, and you don't educate people by saying "you deserved it" (would you accept such a judgement if you got hacked?)

Anet does care, but not a case like this. First of all, making a trade from Guild Wars gold for a Runescape account is illegal; I'm surprised your friend hasn't been banned yet. Secondly, even if this act was allowed, what did you expect? Did you really think that Anet will just go to the company that created Runescape and greet them; following to this, Anet will propose a plan to check logs on both games to ensure that a scam has really happened, so that proper punishments can be made between two games that are completely different and owned by different companies? Lawyers and a large amount of time will be spent just for one player, and in this case, Anet just ignore this.

Is it even possible for this case?

By the way, when I first read the title of this thread, I thought there exists an incident such that someone who was scammed is now ignored by Anet. Nonetheless, after reading the contents of this thread, it is really an incident about someone who tried to do a trade between two games, and this kind of trade is not allowed. Even so, Anet is being generous for not banning the person who was involved in this trade. Yet, this generousity has now been concluded as a type of ignorance. It seems to me that you are trying to bash Anet, but you don't really have a good argument going in here. Although Anet is not a perfect company, throughout the years, they do make updates on new weapons and PvP balances. May I ask what have they done to you to deserve a flame such as this one?

Well lets see trading GW gold for a Runescape a/c... if they punished anyone your friend would get himself a little temp ban too so i'd say its best he forget about it, wouldn't you?

He got "Scammed" in GW.

Still, yeah. Anyone offering to give you an account, buy or sell a key to an account, or anything like that is a scammer. In general, if it's too good to be true, it probably is. And if the transaction isn't confirmable on both ends, it's probably a scam.

That being said, there are trustworthy people in GW. Me for example Or guildies you've known for a bit.

Some scamming is bannable. But to get away with the real cheating you have to work for ANet - FACT

I used to think scammers are annoying.

Now I think that people who QQ about scammers are more irritating.

You cannot really expect Anet to babysit people like that and you have to take responsibility for your own actions at some point. This whole Runescape/Guild Wars thing is a pretty obvious scam.
